Daylight Street

Six walks from Ben Yehuda 142 with Maya Azulay

Who it is for

You already own a camera and you have photographs of streets that feel like lists. This course is for people who want fewer frames and a clearer reason for each one. We work in daylight because that is what this boulevard gives us for most of the year.

You do not need a press pass. You do need patience with shopkeepers and a willingness to put the camera down when someone asks. Maya will stop the group if a doorway is a home and not a backdrop.

Film and digital both belong. We meter by eye and by the camera you brought. We do not switch your kit for a school camera, and we do not sell you one at the desk.

The six sessions

  1. Open shade under awnings — one block north of the school, cameras at chest height until Maya says otherwise.
  2. Noon on the boulevard — hard light, short shadows, why you might wait for a bus to pass.
  3. Doorways and glass — reflections, interiors you can see but should not enter, talking before you raise the camera.
  4. The last hour — shop lights against remaining daylight, color that shifts while you stand still.
  5. A constraint walk — one lens, one street, thirty frames as a ceiling.
  6. Contact sheets at the table — what to keep, what was only a walk, what to try on your own after the course.

Mid-week, the group may sit once more with loupes if enough sheets are ready. That hour is optional and stays inside the school.

Instructor

Maya Azulay

Maya Azulay photographs the same streets she teaches. She will not choreograph strangers. She will ask where your feet were when the shutter opened, and whether you needed the extra steps.

Bring shoes you can stand in for three hours. Bring water. The school is the meeting point; we return to Ben Yehuda 142 before we look at files or sheets.
